Over the past 12 months, Nintendo (NTDOY) has managed to go from an after-thought in consumer's minds to the forefront, thanks to hits like Pokemon Go, Super Mario Run and its latest console, the Nintendo Switch. For a company that has teetered on irrelevance in an ever-changing gaming world, this is no small feat.
Earlier this month, the Switch became available for purchase after considerable amounts of hype, and consumers are buying in.
Gamespot said it sold out of its initial stock (as did other retailers such as Amazon, Wal-Mart and Best Buy). Sales in the United Kingdom topped 80,000 over the first weekend, more than 300,000 were sold in Japan and Nintendo President of the Americas Reggie Fils-Aime told a reporter from the New York Times sales in the Americas were the biggest two-day period in the company's history, topping even the Wii.
Driving initial sales of the $299 system are incredible reviews for The Legend of Zelda: Breadth of the Wild, widely considered one of the best games ever made, but it's important for Nintendo to maintain momentum with the Switch.
JP Morgan analyst Haruka More expects the good times to continue for Nintendo, with games such as Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey are slated for later this year. "We expect acceleration in its sales momentum toward end-2017 driven by Splatoon 2, scheduled launching in this summer," Mora wrote in a note to clients.
With units selling at retailers as fast as they come in on off the delivery trucks, it's important for consumers to read reviews before making the purchase.
TheStreet rounded up five of the best reviews from game reviewers and what their early thoughts on the system are.
